Why aren't More Female Lawyers Making it to Trial?

Deborah Chang is an attorney with Panish Shea & Boyle LLP in Los Angeles. Her practice focuses
on wrongful death, complex torts, catastrophic injuries, and product liability cases for over
25 years. Deborah is no stranger to the courtroom. She is a member of the Los Angeles chapter
of ABOTA, where she holds the rank of Associate, and serves on its Executive Committee, and is
included in the Best Lawyers in American and Southern California Super Lawyers. She serves on
the Executive Committee of the CAOC and is the Chairman of its Diversity Committee. In 2014,
she was recognized as the CAOC Consumer Attorney of the Year.

Sonia Chopra, Ph.D. is a senior litigation consultant with NJP Litigation Consulting. She has been
involved in the litigation consulting field for over 18 years and has worked on over 400 cases from
high stakes criminal trials to multi-million dollar civil litigation. Dr. Chopra also has extensive experience
working with both trial attorneys and witnesses on their communication and persuasion
skills. She recently co-authored an article in Forum with panelist Deborah Chang titled “Where are
all the women lawyers?”

Anne Marie Murphy is a partner at Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy LLP, where she practices civil litigation
focusing on commercial litigation, class actions, consumers’ rights and elder abuse. In 2015
Ms. Murphy was named to the Daily Journal’s list of the top 100 women lawyers in California. Ms. Murphy currently serves on the board of CAOC and California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (“CANHR”), she is also a Commissioner on the Access to Justice Commission.

Sarah London is a partner in the San Francisco office of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstien.
Sarah is experienced in all aspects of trial work. In February 2015, Sarah served as lead trial counsel
in a lawsuit in the Florida smoker’s litigation, obtaining a $3 million judgment for the plaintiff . Recognized
by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star, Sarah has held leadership positions in the New Lawyers
Division of the Consumer Attorneys of California and serves on the Board of Directors for the
YWCA of San Francisco and Marin County.

Katherine Higgins is a trial attorney on the Peters trial team with The Veen Firm in San Francisco.
She handles a wide range of cases involving catastrophic injury and wrongful death, arising from
negligence, premises liability and products liability primarily. She has a unique perspective having
worked in civil defense for many years and has extensive trial experience from her background in
both the civil and criminal courts. Ms. Higgins has been named a Northern California Rising Star
and Top Women Attorney in Northern California 2011-2015.

Jessica Grant is a partner at Venable LLP. She is an experienced trial lawyer who represents clients
in an array of business litigation, products liability and class action matters, with particular emphasis
in the healthcare, technology and pharmaceutical industries. Jessica was the lead attorney in a
three-month trial in which the jury unanimously awarded $816 million after deliberating for just
90 minutes. The verdict was the fourth largest award in the United States in 2013. Jessica received
her second California Lawyer Attorney of the Year Award in 2014 for successfully trying this case.
