SFTLA Trial Boot Camp Series
SFTLA has an exclusive opportunity to help you improve your trial skills in a three-part, hands-on series. Learn from the masters and then immediately practice your skills in front of mock jurors. Receive valuable feedback from experienced faculty members and mock jurors. This program is limited to 15 participants to ensure everyone has enough time to get on their feet and practice the skills.
Program 1: What’s your headline? Developing Themes
March 22, 11am to 3pm
Location: Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein 275 Battery Street, 29th Floor
Speakers: Amy Eskin, Kevin Morrison, and Todd Walburg
Presentation and roundtable discussion on identifying case strengths and weaknesses, developing case theories and themes, and the importance of jury instructions to your case presentation. Hear from the masters, and then work in small break-out groups to dig deeper for a comprehensive work-up of your own case.
Program 2: Being Real – How to Talk to Jurors in Voir Dire Presentation
May 24, noon to 5pm
Location: Golden Gate University School of Law, 536 Mission Street, Suite 2333, Room 2201, San Francisco, CA 94105
Speakers: Amy Eskin, Elinor Leary, Kevin Morrison
On how to use your limited time in voir dire to get jurors talking to elicit biases and lay a foundation for cause challenges as well as how to rehab your good jurors. In small breakout groups, get on your feet to practice voir dire with mock jurors and get feedback from faculty and jurors.
Program 3: Learning from the movies : Pre Trial Motions & Openings
September 20, 11am-3pm
Location: JAMS Two Embarcadero Center, San Francisco, CA 94111
Speakers: Doris Cheng, Amy Eskin, Kevin Morrison
On framing the issues for the jurors in the light most favorable to your case and using pre-trial motions to your advantage. Everyone gets on their feet to practice in front of mock jurors.

Carol Bauss is with the National Jury Project/West. She received her J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law. Ms. Bauss is highly sought after for her expertise in juror attitudes and jury decision-making, and the art of communication in the courtroom. She is especially adept at designing and analyzing mock juror research projects in complex commercial disputes, including intellectual property and white-collar criminal cases.
Doris Cheng is ranked as one of the top 50 women lawyers in Northern California. She is listed among the Best Lawyers of America®, SuperLawyers® and San Francisco Best Lawyers. Specializing in complex injuries caused by third party fault, Ms. Cheng has obtained multi-million dollar settlements and verdicts on behalf of disabled citizens throughout California. Ms. Cheng was the 2015 President of the San Francisco Trial Lawyer Association. She is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and the American College of Trial Lawyers. She is a coauthor of The Rutter Group’s California Practice Guide on Personal Injury.
Amy Eskin is Of Counsel to Levin Simes LLP and is a trial lawyer who has been successfully representing injured consumers nationally in personal injury, medical negligence, products liability and complex pharmaceutical and medical device cases for more than 25 years.
Elinor Leary is the team leader of the Leary Trial Team, whose cases involve worksite injuries, defective products, dangerous property conditions, negligent security & vehicle/bicycle/pedestrian collisions. She was a public defender and has been a clinical professor at USF where she taught jury selection & trial skills. She has been on the Super Lawyers lists continuously since 2011; Top Northern California Female Lawyers since 2012; & Best Lawyers since 2015.
J. Kevin Morrison, Esq. is a partner at Jones Clifford, LLP in San Francisco and exclusively represents people who are injured, or are the survivors of someone who was killed, as a result of the negligence of another. He has more than 20 years’ experience in litigating cases involving car crashes, big rig and commercial truck crashes, pedestrian and bicycle incidents, construction site injuries, and products liability matters. Kevin has tried cases throughout California, and was recently elected to membership in ABOTA where he is co-chair of its Civility Matters committee and is one of its youngest members.
Todd A. Walburg has been handling personal injury, product liability and mass tort cases for 15 years. Before practicing law, Todd worked for a trial lawyer in Oakland for over ten years. Todd received his B.A. from UCLA and his J.D. from USF, where he started a student chapter for ATLA (now AAJ). Todd was awarded the Leesfield/ATLA Scholarship in 1998. Todd is currently a Partner at Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, where he is the Chair of the Auto and Transportation Cases Practice Group. He recently handled five jury trials against Big Tobacco in Florida. Todd has been named a Rising Star and a Super Lawyer for Northern California for the past seven years. In 2012, Todd was appointed to the PSC for the Toyota Unintended Acceleration JCCP by the Presiding Judge of Los Angeles Superior Court. Todd was selected to the Top 100 Trial Lawyers for 2015 by The National Trial Lawyers.
