The San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association (SFTLA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that has provided benefits and services to its members for over fifty years, including plaintiffs’ attorneys, defense attorneys, law students, and law office support staff.
The association’s primary goal is to deliver innovative and practical continuing legal education to members so they can better serve their clients and communities. SFTLA provides outreach and support to help members run their law firms, connect with top legal vendors and service providers, network with members of the Bench, local legislators, law students, and attorneys across both sides of the bar.
SFTLA is committed to increasing diversity in the legal field and is proud to have multiple committees focused on educating, promoting, and fundraising to facilitate parity for women and minorities in law firms and in the courtroom. SFTLA’s Diversity Committee networks with local law schools to encourage interest in legal positions that are traditionally underrepresented by women and minorities. The Diversity Committee hosts many networking events, educational seminars, and an annual Mock Trial competition where students from local Bay Area law schools compete before volunteer judges and trial attorneys. Each year the Diversity Committee selects a handful of law students who are awarded scholarships and given a summer internship in some of the premier Bay Area plaintiffs’ practice law firms.
SFTLA also boasts an active Women’s Caucus that promotes networking opportunities and educational events highlighting issues specifically affecting female trial attorneys. The Caucus hosts an annual Women Referring Women event attended by dozens of female attorneys, judges, court reporters, jury consultants, structure settlement consultants, experts, and other specialty vendors.
SFTLA encourages individuals from all practice areas to join and enjoy opportunities for case referrals and expansion of your professional and personal network. In addition to all the educational and networking opportunities, SFTLA members have access to a host of additional benefits, including special discounts on group health insurance plans, fitness clubs, rental cars, and so much more. Plaintiffs’ only practitioners also get exclusive access to the SFTLA Listserv, where members share legal strategies, sample briefs, and the latest courtroom intel.
